Patience is one of the most challenging habits to practice on a daily basis and this is largely because of the stress and frustration of everyday life. This can be even more challenging for entrepreneurs; from trying to remain patient and calm, stuck in a traffic jam on your way to work to having to find new clients, keep your current ones happy as well as maintaining a good office culture, staying patient amongst all the stressors of being an entrepreneur can be difficult, but this is all the more reason why it is important. Here are five reasons why patience is important for an entrepreneur.
1. Patience helps you avoid making hasty decisions
We are often focused on what it feels like to get what we want and because of this, we may overlook questions about whether it is the right time or the right place for us to be making these decisions. Hasty decisions often ruin crucial first impressions with a product, service or new idea that isn’t fully fleshed out yet. Hurrying to the next stage leaves little time to fix mistakes from the previous stages.
Rather, take adequate time to conduct research, study the market, understand the competition and your market before rushing into a new business avenue.
2. Drive you to work smarter
If you have an entrepreneurial mindset, you already understand that it is vital that you wear multiple hats within your business. This often leads to hasty work in order to move on to one of the endless next tasks, however, when you focus on patience, you start to become comfortable with the reality that building something of value takes time.
Although cliched in some sense, this can help you work smarter, rather than harder on tasks that don’t effectively lead you to where you want to go. Having patience allows you to step back and evaluate all of your next steps and which of them are the most beneficial to building something of value.
3. Deepen your resilience
What these last two years of Covid-19 have taught us is that it’s important to develop resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity and keep going. Resilience is a critical trait for entrepreneurs, small business owners and just about everyone else. With patience and resilience, you remain focused on your goals in the face of unexpected adversity. You understand that your goal is still possible to achieve and worth moving toward, so you can effectively navigate your way through the frustrations that can pop up on your way. In its essence, patience helps you stay effective in the long run by increasing your resilience.
4. Choose the best opportunities
Rather than continuously moving simply for the sake of movement, patience helps you narrow down and focus on the best opportunities rather than all of the opportunities. This can include just about anything, from business ideas and business partners to hiring, funding and many other areas. What is constant in all of these however, is that you will find opportunities that look good at first glance.
Patience comes in, when helping you not blindly rushing into those opportunities without figuring out which are the best ones. There will be that little voice in the back of your head telling you to take your time, evaluate all the options, lay out the risks and the benefits and then make an informed decision. Patience helps you identify red flags in opportunities you would otherwise jump straight into.
5. Creating a healthy company culture
Something, we have talked about before in our blogs is having a good company culture and that starts at the top. You, as an entrepreneur create an environment that becomes your company’s culture. To attract and keep hold of the best talent, as well as maximize employee output, you need to create a work environment that keeps everyone happy and excited to be at work.
Impatience can lead to a toxic work culture, which can make employees feel uncomfortable, undervalued and over-stressed. It can also lead to a decrease in the quality of work due to employees setting unrealistic deadlines for themselves and not having adequate time to complete their tasks.
Patience is important for everyone, but even more so for entrepreneurs. Practicing patience can also help you build on your existing entrepreneurial skills. So, take a deep breath, focus on slowing down and take your time to make better decisions for your business. In turn these decisions will improve your business and help you achieve more.
